There is a fundamental difference between the expressions of “I have to do this” and,“ I want to do this”. Our sense of “having to” illustrates an imposed external source whereas accessing a desire or “wanting to ” reflects an internal motivation. It showcases the power of being at choice.

As you look ahead in your career as a leader, what lies ahead for you? Do you listen to your inner voice which tends to limit you to the role you currently hold – one that you may have occupied for some time or perhaps for ever. You tell yourself you should follow the same path that has given you a secure job and all the comforts your family enjoys, if you’re smart.


“It’s the what then, that taps the dreamer or the inventor that is present in all of us.”


This safe and secure place is jolted when a new job or the chance of moving somewhere else in the world with your company opportunity presents itself. You find yourself wondering “What if I were to go for this opportunity and actually get the job? What then?” It’s the, what then, that taps the dreamer or the inventor in all of us.

One of the ways this external vs. internal motivation is revealed is when you ask yourself, “as I look ahead, am I am going to follow what is expected of me or am I creating something else?” Something that you have dreamed about or never thought of, until now.

The enclosed exercise is designed to help you capture your thoughts on what is possible if you dream – if you invent rather than follow what your or others have imposed on your future. Find some quiet time to brainstorm and capture your thoughts of what lies ahead if you follow the expected or the anticipated path. Then give yourself time or permission to dream about what else is possible. “If there were no limits placed on what you can do, what would do with your life?

Free form. Jot down what thoughts pop into your head without judgment. Put the exercise away for a while and return to your recorded thoughts and see what meets your wants. And then ask, “What now?”
