Picture it….take a few deep breaths and imagine yourself being there right now. How does it feel?
Last weekend I found a new happy place and it was breathtaking. The weather was perfect with a slight breeze, sun warming up my skin, along with great friends canoeing in crystal clear calm water. Yes, it took us over four long hours to canoe and portage to reach our destination, but once we found our campsite in Algonquin Park it was worth the heat and pain we all felt in our arms from carrying our canoe and provisions.
I haven’t gone camping since middle school and don’t get me wrong – I love being in nature and making creative meals over a campfire but I’m more of a cottage fan, with a comfy bed and a proper bathroom! This was a new portaging experience and I was a little skeptical (perhaps nervous) and not the most “excited”. Like I said, once we found our destination I was able to relax my shoulders and I began to really appreciate the total experience.
We made the site our home for the weekend, prepared delicious meals together, the weather was perfect and the view was breathless. Everyone turned their phones off and we didn’t talk about work and the really stressful things everyone is going through these days. It was so peaceful to escape for a few days off the radar; to connect with each other, and nature.
These pandemic times are tough and I am so grateful that this weekend allowed me to take a step back to just appreciate the sun, nature and people I have been missing.
