Congratulations, you made it to the start of a new year! And with that comes setting or recalibrating your personal development stretch goals that will be your focus for 2019.

A common complaint, which sometimes translates into a goal, is “How will you introduce or re-introduce balance into your life?”. If I were your executive coach I would gently nudge into one of the most powerful coaching questions “What is in your control?”

Go ahead take a few minutes to record your answers to the 10 question, Work-Life Balance Quiz provided by the Canadian Mental Health Association. Tally your scores and then refer to what your score corresponds with.

What your score means
0 – 3: Your life is out of balance – you need to make significant changes to find your equilibrium. But you can take control!
4 – 6: You’re keeping things under control – but only barely. Now is the time to take action before your knocked off balance.
7 – 10: You’re on the right track! You’ve been able to achieve work/life balance – now make sure you protect it.

“ If you are like most people, this brief quiz will underline what you already know – your life is out of control and you feel helpless about this lack of self-management. ”

How does this snapshot make your feel?  If you are like most people, this brief quiz will underline what you already know – your life is out of control and you feel helpless about this lack of self-management.

Here are just a few tips to help you capture your time in service of what you need.

  1. Schedule short 5 minute breaks throughout your day. Better still set aside 3 x 5 minute breaks to check-in with yourself and ask “I s what I am doing right now important to me and my company in the scheme of things?”
  2. Unplug from your laptop, iPad, and cell phone to reduce the temptation to be continuously checking in with your primary distraction.
  3. Say “No” to every request or demand put in front of you. Know your priorities and assert your right to say “No” to the projects or activities that don’t align with your life priorities and responsibilities.

Reflect on a time when you were at your best. “What were thinking and feeling that gave you this intoxicating power that lead to accomplishment and fulfillment?”
