I hope you’ve enjoyed a rewarding summer—whether through meaningful work, travel, time with family and friends, or simply the warm, sunny days of 2026.

Perhaps you feel it too: the arrival of September and the familiar back-to-school rhythm often bring a natural desire to revisit our goals, take stock of where things stand, and consider the days and months ahead.

Along with being fortunate enough to experience an exceptional Canadian summer, I’ve enjoyed reading and listening to some extraordinary fiction and leadership-focused books. One that particularly resonated with me was How to Know a Person by New York Times journalist and author David Brooks.

The book explores how deeply we all value being seen, heard, and understood. With his characteristic curiosity and commitment to personal growth, Brooks offers thoughtful insights into becoming more understanding, considerate, and generous toward others—and into the genuine joy that comes from meaningful human connection.

I was especially grateful for the chapter about how to be present with someone who is in despair. Without going into detail, it is particularly timely for me as I look for ways to cope with and support a close friend who is losing their battle with cancer.

I encourage you to explore and deepen the art of conversation through empathy, active listening and deep understanding and accelerate the art of rediscovering the lost art of knowing people and bridging the divisions that divide us.

Wishing you the very best during these remaining days of summer and a vibrant, fulfilling autumn.
