Several years ago, I shared my thoughts with you on an obvious and phenomenally accepted business practice of holding unproductive meetings.

A few weeks ago, I was reminded of the perils of meetings when I met with a corporate senior executive and noticed the Rules for Meetings posted on a wall of the boardroom. When I asked how these posted guidelines were helping to make the meetings productive, my client rolled her eyes and said “ I wish. ”

Meeting rules are useless unless they are carefully and consistently applied in the interests of meaningful dialogue and disciplined action.


Like our core values, meeting guidelines are merely shallow words unless they are matched by consistently appropriate behaviour which is in keeping with the intended purpose. Meeting rules are useless unless they are carefully and consistently applied in the interests of meaningful dialogue and disciplined action.

The enclosed article captures some common sense boundaries that will support the gathering of select individuals for a common purpose and outcome. Instructions such as these will serve to lessen the negative impact associated with the wasteful drain of time and energy that meetings have on us all.
